1. How can I become an Election Judge?

Election Judges are paid officials trained to handle all aspects of voting at the polling place, from registering voters to reporting vote totals at the end of the day. If you are interested in becoming an Election Judge you can contact the Ramsey County Elections office at 651-266-2171 or go to rcelections.org

2. Are election judges paid?

Yes, most judges are paid $20 for training and $150 for each full day of work.

3. Who is eligible to be an Election Judge?

Any Minnesota resident eligible to vote who can read, write and speak English can be an election judge.

Minnesota Statute 204B.195 allows individuals to take time off from work, without penalty or reduction in pay*, to serve as election judges on election day(s). A 20-day written notice requesting to be absent from work for this purpose must be submitted to the employer.

*Without a reduction in pay' means you will earn what you would have at work that day. Generally, this means that your employer has the right to deduct the amount you made being an election judge from your normal day. You can voluntarily take a vacation day to be fully paid by your employer and receive the judge salary you earn as extra income. An employer cannot force you to take vacation or any other form of paid leave.

4. How can I vote by Absentee?

In person Absentee Voting is done at Ramsey County Elections Office located at 90 Plato Blvd West, St. Paul, MN or you can vote by Absentee by mail by going to rcelections.org

5. What if I am unable to sign my absentee ballot application?

If you are unable to sign your application you may simply place an X mark on the signature line. You may also authorize someone else to sign it for you by having that person sign your name and their name next to it with a note stating that such authorization was given by the voter. A Power of Attorney signature is not acceptable on its own.

6. Do I need a witness to vote absentee?

NEW IN 2020 - Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, no witnesses are required.

Minnesota Election Law requires every voter to show their blank ballot to a witness prior to filling it out. The same witness must also fully complete the witness section on the ballot return signature envelope. Any registered voter in the state can act as a witness. Additional witnesses that do not have a state residency requirement are a Notary Public, County, City or Town Clerk, College Registrar, Judicial Officer, or any other official who can administer an oath.

7. How do I know if my absentee ballot has been accepted?

You can track the status of your absentee ballot by clicking on the following link "Track Your Absentee Ballot". You will have to provide your name, date or birth and the same identification number you included on your application.

8. Why was my absentee ballot rejected?

If your absentee ballot is rejected no later than Friday prior to Election Day, we will send you a replacement ballot and a letter explaining what you need to do to correct the error. The following situations may cause your absentee ballot to be rejected:
• Voter does not sign the return signature envelope
• Witness section not completed or insufficiently completed (must include witness name, witness’s MN address and signature, or a notary information with an official seal or stamp)
• A proof of residence not recorded on the return signature envelope for a non-registered absentee voter
• No voter registration application included by a non-registered voter
• Ballot arrives late after the deadline or is dropped off by a voter at the polling place on Election day
